First Amendment Rights:
Let’s start off identifying the difference between a banned and a challenged book. A challenged book is the attempt to remove an item because of it content, and a banning is the actually removal of that item. The top people who challenge a book are Parents, and the top institution is Schools. However, it is my belief that the schools are forced to challenge these books because of the parents.
Censorship has a negative effect on everyone involved. The teachers who cannot teach certain subjects; the library’s that have to keep certain books off their shelves;and the students who are restricted when it comes to broadening their reading experience. Teachers have to pay a lot of money and in some cases tarnish their jobs. They do this just to try and keep controversial books in their classroom, because they feel it has some form of educational value. Students could be reading something that could make them in a lot of ways more culturally aware of their surroundings, and because of banning or challenges not have those book available to them. Lets not forget the authors and publishers who will have more difficulty recieving revenue if they cannot sell their books.
Based on the research I have done the top 4 reasons for challenging a book in order is: sexually explicit, offensive language, unsuited to age group, and violence. The Hunger games has been challenged for 2 of these reasons the violence and unsuited age group. I believe it is for selfish reasons that people attempt to challenge,or ban books.
I believe that people attempt to ban these books because they are against their beliefs. I am not allowed to tell you what to believe in so you should not tell me that your beliefs should be able to restrict me and my family:
"'Free Access to Libraries for Minors, an interpretation of the Library Bill of Rights (ALA's basic policy concerning access to information) states that,“Librarians and governing bodies should maintain that parents—and only parents—have the right and the responsibility to restrict the access of their children—and only their children—to library resources.”Censorship by librarians of constitutionally protected speech, whether for protection or for any other reason, violates the First Amendment'" (About).
